The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch and Wii U video game consoles. The game is a part of The Legend of Zelda series, and follows amnesiac protagonist Link, who awakens from a hundred-year slumber to a mysterious voice that guides him to defeat Calamity Ganon before he can destroy the kingdom of Hyrule.
Gameplay of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild departs from most games in The Legend of Zelda series because it features a fully open-world environment, twelve times larger than the overworld in Twilight Princess, with less emphasis on defined entrances and exits to areas. Similar to the original The Legend of Zelda, the player is placed into the game’s world with very little instruction, and is allowed to explore freely at their own pace. Breath of the Wild introduces a new physics engine to the Zelda series that establishes a consistent set of gameplay rules, but also frees players up to approach a puzzle or problem in different ways rather than trying to find the single workable method. Along with a physics engine, the game’s open world also integrates a “chemistry engine”, which defines the physical properties of most objects and governs how they interact with the player and one another. Taken together, these two design approaches result in a generally unstructured and interactive world that rewards players for experimenting with different aspects of the world and allows for completing the story non-linearly.
Link awakens from a century-long sleep inside the Shrine of Resurrection and is guided by a mysterious voice outside to what is now the ruined kingdom of Hyrule, where he meets an old man who reveals himself to be the spirit of King Rhoam, the last King of Hyrule. Link learns from the King that before his sleep, a great evil known as Calamity Ganon ravaged the kingdom and left it in ruin. Unable to be defeated, it was sealed inside Hyrule Castle while the remains of the kingdom were reclaimed over time by nature. While trapped, however, its power is still growing, and the King pleads for Link to defeat it before it breaks free and destroys Hyrule.
Upon leaving the Great Plateau, Link is encouraged to go see the Sheikah elder Impa where he learns about the Divine Beasts and Guardians: 10,000 years prior the machines were created and successfully used by another hero and another princess to defeat the Calamity. Throughout the ages, however, knowledge of the ancient technology was lost until the anticipated return of the Calamity a century prior, which led to a frantic reassembly of the army. In a move that surprised everyone, however, the Calamity managed to corrupt the entire Guardian army, including the Divine Beasts, with it’s Malice, turning them against Hyrule. As a last resort, Princess Zelda laid Link, wounded from being attacked by the Guardians, into the Shrine of Resurrection to heal while she used her awoken sealing powers to trap herself inside the castle with the Calamity.
Surprised that Link lacks any memory of Zelda, Impa instructs him to go out and recover his memories. Along the way, the four Champions, selected to pilot the Divine Beasts a century prior, help him board and reclaim them from the phantoms Ganon created inside them to ensure his control. Link also endures many trials in the ancient shrines scattered throughout the land and eventually reclaims the Master Sword, which Zelda left to be guarded by the Deku Tree during his sleep.
After reclaiming the Divine Beasts and recovering his memories, the mysterious voice, now known as Zelda, instructs Link to go to Hyrule Castle where she is waiting for him. Link enters and, after getting past the Guardians blocking his way, defeats Calamity Ganon with the Master Sword only to reveal the Calamity’s true form, Dark Beast Ganon. Zelda entrusts Link with the Light Bow, which he uses to defeat the Dark Beast. Zelda aids Link by glowing with a holy light and destroying the Calamity in the process.
The Legend of Zelda Breath of The Wild received universal acclaim from critics, who deemed it to be one of the greatest video games of all time , and was the recipient of numerous awards. Critics praised the game’s open-ended, physics-driven gameplay that encourages player experimentation and exploration, with many calling it a landmark title in open- world game design, although minor criticism was directed at the game’s technical performance at launch, which was improved through post-release updates. The game broke Nintendo’s sales records in numerous regions, with the Switch version of the game far exceeding sales of the Wii U version, selling over four million copies worldwide by September 2017, making it the best-selling game on the system.
